How we can help?
-
You can have an eye examination for free if you have an eye problem that occurs suddenly. Under the Eye Health Examination Wales (EHEW) initiative you are entitled to have your eyes examined free of charge by a registered optometrist if you have an eye problem that occurred suddenly (acutely) which you think requires urgent attention.
Patients with an acute problem with their eye or vision can be seen for the following issues:
Minor eye injury
Red eye
Painful eye
Foreign body
Sudden loss/ change in vision
New onset flashes/ floaters
You can self-refer to a local optometrist without the need to see a GP
-
Your optometrist will discuss your symptoms and examine your eyes using tests tailored to your concern. This assessment focuses on your eye problem and may differ from a routine sight test for glasses.
We’ll explain the findings and discuss any advice, treatment, follow-up or referral you may need. Please bring your current glasses, medication details and any relevant eye-clinic letters.

Urgent eye assessments are available through Wales General Ophthalmic Services (WGOS 2). Your optometrist will assess your symptoms and confirm whether an examination is needed under this service. If it is, the examination is NHS-funded and free of charge.
Eligibility is based on your clinical needs and differs from eligibility for a routine NHS sight test.
